All three kinds of twilight, for this day
| Twilight | Sun below horizon | Morning starts | Evening ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| Astronomical twilightBefore this in the morning and after it in the evening, the sky is fully dark: the best time for faint stars and the Milky Way. | 18° | 4:59 AM | 6:18 PM |
| Nautical twilightThe horizon is still visible at sea; bright stars are out. | 12° | 5:32 AM | 5:46 PM |
| Civil twilightEnough light to be outdoors without a lamp. This is what we call first light and dark. | 6° | 6:04 AM | 5:14 PM |
Definitions follow the U.S. Naval Observatory.[46] In summer far from the equator, the sun may not sink low enough for the darker twilights; the table then says "doesn't happen". Solar noon today: 11:39 AM.

What time does it get dark when the clocks change?
March 8: clocks go forward one hour
Sunset jumps from 5:54 PM to 6:55 PM on the clock, so evenings suddenly stay light an hour longer.
November 1: clocks go back one hour
Sunset jumps from 5:53 PM to 4:52 PM on the clock, so it gets dark an hour earlier overnight.
Does the sun rise exactly in the east?
Today the sun rises 21° south of due east (ESE, 111°) and sets 21° south of due west (WSW, 249°).
Over the year, sunrise swings between 58° at the June solstice and 121° at the December solstice. It comes up due east (90°) only around the equinoxes in March and September.
Compass bearings: north 0°, east 90°, south 180°, west 270°. The thick lines are today; dashed lines are the solstices.
Brahma Muhurta and Rahu Kaal in New York City, New York
Brahma Muhurta
4:57 AM–5:45 AM
96 to 48 minutes before sunrise
Rahu Kaal · Saturday
9:06 AM–10:22 AM
one eighth of the daytime, set by the weekday
Brahma Muhurta is the early-morning period that Hindu tradition holds best for prayer, meditation and study. The common reckoning puts it between the fourth and the second ghatika before sunrise; a ghatika is 24 minutes, so that is 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise.[47] Some traditions count only the 48 minutes before sunrise, or the hour and a half before it.
Rahu Kaal (Rahu Kalam) is a stretch of about an hour and a half that is traditionally avoided for starting anything new. The daytime, from sunrise to sunset, is split into eight equal parts, and the weekday picks which part: Monday the 2nd, Saturday the 3rd, Friday the 4th, Wednesday the 5th, Thursday the 6th, Tuesday the 7th and Sunday the 8th.[48] Because the parts follow your local sunrise and sunset, Rahu Kaal shifts with the season and from city to city, which is why a fixed table like "7:30 to 9 on Mondays" is only an approximation.
We give these times as a calendar tradition and make no claims about their effects. Temples and family panchangs may follow a different reckoning; for rituals, go by your own tradition.

What time does it get dark?
Sunset isn't the moment it gets dark. After the sun drops below the horizon, the sky stays bright for a while because sunlight still reaches the upper atmosphere and scatters down to you. Astronomers split this twilight into three stages by how far the sun is below the horizon: civil (down to 6°), nautical (12°) and astronomical (18°).[46] The time we show as "dark at" is the end of civil twilight, the point after which you'd normally need a light to be outdoors. Truly dark skies, good for faint stars and meteor showers, come only after astronomical twilight ends, roughly an hour or more after sunset.
How long the dusk lasts depends on where you are. Near the equator the sun drops almost straight down, and it gets dark about 21 to 24 minutes after sunset. In New York it takes about half an hour; in London, 40 minutes in winter and nearly 50 in June; in Edinburgh in June, about an hour, and farther north the sky never gets fully dark on summer nights.
Why isn't the earliest sunset on the shortest day?
The shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere is the December solstice (December 21 this year), but the earliest sunset comes weeks before it and the latest sunrise weeks after. In New York this winter, the earliest sunset is on December 7 (4:28 PM) and the latest sunrise on January 4 (7:20 AM). The reason is that solar noon, the moment the sun is highest, isn't fixed on the clock: around the December solstice it drifts later by about half a minute a day, because Earth moves fastest in its slightly oval orbit in early January and its axis is tilted. The day keeps shrinking at both ends, but the whole day slides later, so evenings start brightening before mornings do.
Why are days longer in summer, and opposite in Australia?
Earth's axis is tilted about 23.4°. For half the year the Northern Hemisphere leans toward the sun, which then climbs higher and stays up longer; for the other half the Southern Hemisphere does.[35] That's also why the seasons are reversed: when New York has its shortest days in December, Sydney has its longest. This year Sydney gets 14 hours 25 minutes of daylight at the December solstice and only 9 hours 54 minutes in June. Within the Arctic and Antarctic circles the effect becomes extreme: the sun stays up for weeks in summer and doesn't rise at all in midwinter. The tool above says so on those days.
Sunrise, sunset and prayer times
The sunrise and sunset on this page are astronomical: the moments the top of the sun touches a flat horizon. Religious timetables use their own rules. Islamic prayer times such as Fajr and Isha are based on the sun's angle below the horizon, and different organizations use different angles, so the same city can have noticeably different Fajr times in different timetables. For prayer, fasting and other religious times, follow your local mosque, temple or community.
How these times are calculated
We calculate every time from the sun's position for the coordinates of the place you choose, using the standard definitions: sunrise and sunset when the sun's upper edge is on the horizon, with the bending of light by the atmosphere included.[46] Moonrise and moonset are worked out the same way on our Moon Phase Today page. The city list comes from GeoNames[37] and uses each city's center. The times assume a flat horizon at sea level: behind mountains or tall buildings the sun appears a few minutes later and disappears earlier, while from a high viewpoint or over the sea you may see it a minute or two longer. Unusual air temperatures near the ground can shift the moment by a minute as well.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a sunrise or sunset take?
From the moment the sun's disk first touches the horizon until it has fully set takes about 2 minutes near the equator (Singapore, Mumbai), about 3 minutes in New York, 3½ to 4½ minutes in London and over 5 minutes in Edinburgh around the solstices. The farther you are from the equator, the shallower the sun's path through the horizon, so the slower it sinks; in Anchorage it takes about 8 minutes in June.
Is golden hour before or after sunset?
The evening golden hour comes before sunset: it starts when the sun is about 6° above the horizon and ends as it sets. There's a morning one too, from sunrise until the sun climbs to 6°. Despite the name it's rarely a full hour: about half an hour in the tropics (Singapore, Mumbai), 35 to 45 minutes in New York, and close to an hour in London, where it's longest in winter, when the sun sets at a shallow angle.
What is first light, and how early is it before sunrise?
First light is the start of civil twilight, when the sun is 6° below the horizon and the sky is bright enough to see without a lamp. It comes about 21 to 24 minutes before sunrise near the equator, about half an hour before it in New York, and 40 to 60 minutes before it in London or Edinburgh in summer. In the evening, the same moment is what we call "dark at".
Why is the sunset red?
Sunlight is a mix of all colors, and air scatters blue light much more than red; that's why the daytime sky is blue. Near the horizon, the sun's light crosses far more air to reach you, so most of the blue is scattered away and the oranges and reds are left. Dust, smoke or sea salt in the air can deepen the colors.
